A Practitioner’s Workbook

In the book Transforming Hispanic Serving Institutions for Equity and Justice Dr. Garcia lays out a framework to guide HSIs in their organizational change work, arguing that colleges and universities must do more than enroll 25% Latine/x students in order to adequately serve them. The framework has already proven to be useful in practice, but many practitioners are looking for more; more tools and more resources to support their transformation work. Co-created by leading HSI scholar, Gina Garcia, and Title V Director at Cabrillo College, Ann Endris, this workbook is the tool you need.

 

We created this workbook with HSI educators and decision makers in mind, as a resource to catalyze journeys of transformation. We hope this workbook will spark new ideas and conversations about what it means to be an HSI and enact servingness on your campus, inspire innovation and collaboration, and support change makers in your efforts to transform your institutions. We suggest you give yourself plenty of time to work through each section of the workbook. It is not something that should be completed quickly, rather it is a resource for collaborative efforts at your campus. We think that you need time and space to freedom dream, and hope you will carve out time to think, dream, and strategize en comunidad. And we definitely encourage you to use colored pencils and markers to complete the workbook. Draw, dream, doodle, and imagine a different future for HSIs.

 

This workbook is for all of us: staff and faculty members, students, administrators, board members, alumni, and community members, veterans of HSI work and those freshly introduced to the frameworks. We hope this workbook guides and inspires your work to transform your institutions and builds community through the process.
